If we had to choose only one skin care product to have for the rest of our lives, it would be, without a doubt, sunscreen.
It is such an important step that needs to be incorporated into your daily skincare routine. There’s no point investing in fancy treatments and serums if you aren’t using a sunscreen.
So why is it so important?
The UV radiation from the sun – UVA’s and UVB’s – cause premature skin ageing, eye damage, skin cancers and damage to your overall immune system.
UVA’s are responsible for those luscious, bronzed summer tans but it also causes damage to collagen.
Collagen is the most common protein in our bodies and is found in our skin, muscle, bones, tissues and blood vessels. In particular, collagen is responsible for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and keeping your skin firm. Unlike UVB’s, the damage from UVA’s is gradual and its effects results in sagging, wrinkly, leathery skin.
UVA’s are present all the time regardless of the weather – cloud cover, rain or shine! It’s the reason why your dermal therapist will insist you on wearing sunscreen every. single. day. No exceptions!
UVB’s can penetrate the epidermis (outer layer of skin) and causes sunburn and cancerous changes. However, keep in mind that both UVA’s and UVB’s can cause skin cancer.
So unless you want to commit to living underground 24/7, we suggest you enjoy the sun sensibly. This means putting on a sunscreen every day, wearing a hat, sunglasses and where possible, limiting the time you are out in the sun – hunt for the shady cool spots!
Those with moles, always remember to book an annual check-up!
Remember, it’s never too late to start protecting your skin!
If you do suffer from sun damaged skin – whether its pigmentation, wrinkles or sagging skin – don’t fret; just make an appointment with Aspire Medispa to discuss your treatment options!
